Jerry Wayne Moody

Sgt. Jerry Wayne Moody was born October 2nd, 1946 in Mansfield, Missouri, the son of Estel and Eulalia (Pool) Moody. He passed from this life on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020 in, Muskogee, Oklahoma. He was 74.

Jerry was a patient man that never showed pain. He was an expert marksman. He enjoyed rifles, hunting and fishing. He cherished spending time with his sons and grandsons hunting deer and fishing for catfish. He loved spending hours on winding roads with his twin brother Larry on motorcycles. Jerry Wayne Moody was and is a hero.

Airman First Class Jerry W. Moody distinguished himself by outstanding achievement at Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam on 12 May 1967. On that date, Airman Moody was on night duty as a Crew Chief, 531st Tactical Fighter Squadron. When the base came under attack by several Viet Cong Mortar Positions, Airman Moody was forced to run over 200 meters through the intense mortar barrage to a bunker. As soon as the mortar fire ceased, Airman Moody ran to the aircraft revetments to help minimize the damage from secondary fire and explosions. Airman Moody immediately noticed an aircraft with ruptured drop tanks and forward fuel cell. He courageously waded into hundreds of gallons of jet fuel in the revetment to tow the aircraft out of the pool of fuel. Disregarding his own personal safety, Airman Moody worked on the fuel soaked aircrafts for over thirty minutes while secondary fires blazed all around his area. The distinctive accomplishments of Airman Moody reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Jerry is survived by two sons; Chris Moody of Fort Gibson and Jeff Moody of Fort Gibson, three daughters; Penny Cyphers and husband, Brian, of Oklahoma City, Tammy Goforth of Oklahoma City and Wendy Howard and husband, Danny of Oklahoma City, nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, three brothers, Ray Moody of Tecumseh, Oklahoma, twin, Larry Moody and wife, Mary, of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, and Claude Moody and wife, Bonnie, of Owasso, Oklahoma, and. Numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Emma and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, October 29th, 2020 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Justin Kinman officiating. Interment will follow in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery under the direction of Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home.

Viewing will be Thursday, October 22nd, 2020 at Lescher-Millsap Funeral Service Chapel in Fort Gibson, 700 E. Poplar from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

The family has requested social distancing be practiced and masked be worn for both viewing and funeral service.
