Obituary

Born June 17, 1930 in Wichita, Kansas to Catherine and Walter Buttram. My father died in 1937 and I was raised by my mother and my grandmother Amanda Buttram Cook. I was Educated at Irving Elementary School, Horace Mann Jr. High and Wichita High School North from where I graduated in 1948. On graduation I went to work at the Fourth National Bank in Wichita where I was employed full time until I enrolled at the University of Wichita. I continued to work part time until graduation in 1956 when I began my teaching career at Minneha Junior High where I was a social studies teacher and a basketball coach.

I completed my Masters Degree in 1963. In 1966 I took a position at my alma mater, North High, as a Social Studies Teacher and assistant Basketball Coach. He continued at North for 19 years where he was Student Council Sponsor, Chairman of the Building Committee and eventually Chairman of the Social Studies Department. In 1985 I took a position in the Social Studies Department at Tahlequah High School, Tahlequah, Oklahoma where I taught for three years. In 1988 I went into the ministry of the United Methodist Church serving at Braggs(part time while teaching one year, I took a job preaching at Westville-Zion for 3 1/2 years and moved back to Gore where I stayed for 8 1/2 years retiring at age 70. During my time of service I completed the Basic and Advanced Course of Study at Perkins School of Theology in Dallas and Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa.

After retirement I continued to serve as an Interim Pastor wherever needed for terms of one month to Four years. Churches served included, Westville-Bethel. Muskogee Wesley-Okay, McCurtain-Keota, Copan, Muskogee Trinity, Canadian, Cookson, Mounds-Schulter, Warner-Oktaha, Muldrow Trinity, Chouteau, Gore, and Tulsa Aldersgate.

On May 10, 1952 I married Sallie Brannan who had been my supervisor at The Fourth National Bank. She continued in this capacity for the remainder of my life. To this union three children were born. During this time I served in the 137th Infantry Kansas Army National Guard for 32 years and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. I was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Wichita where I taught Sunday School and served as Lay Leader. When we moved to Oklahoma, Sallie and I joined the Gore United Methodist Church and from there I went into the ministry.

In l985 we moved from our native Kansas to Lake Tenkiller Oklahoma. I fell in love with the Lake area when the family took vacations to there and when the opportunity presented itself we moved to our vacation home on the lake. I served as a Commissioner on our local water system and was a member of Gore-Webbers Falls Lions Club. Survivors are wife Sallie, a son, David/Jacki of Denver, Colorado, a daughter, Susan who also lives on Lake Tenkiller, a son Mark/Steve of Wichita, Kansas, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 7 nieces and 2 nephews.

I enjoyed fishing, reading, movies, gardening, my three careers and my home on the lake.
