Lois Mae (Simmons) Johnson, 94, a life-long resident of Blackgum Mountain, Oklahoma, passed from this life on December 14, 2018. She was born August 14, 1924 to Kelly and Lila Pearl (Pack) Simmons, the 2nd of 8 children. She married Steven Johnson in 1942 and they shared a happy marriage for 56 years until his passing in 1998. They had 4 children: Mae Dean, Johnny, Linda and Joe. She was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Most of her life she and Steve lived on her mother’s original Cherokee allotment land.
She loved to cook, sew and drive. She enjoyed making handmade quilts, fleece “tootsie warmers”, and stuffed animals as gifts for others. She would often cook for family and friends, especially in times of need. She was a staple for years at the Vian Christmas parade where she would dress-up like Mrs. Clause and handout the teddy bears she handmade all year long.
During her long and full life she had many different careers, from working in the fields as a sharecropper as a child, to picking fruit in California with her husband and kids during the depression, and in later years, cooking in churches, restaurants, and school kitchens. But her favorite thing was taking care of others. She always shared a gentle smile and a sweet laugh with most everyone.
Lois valued education and took pride in her families’ educational accomplishments. She would have the Vian Newspaper write acknowledgments of any school acceptances or graduations, or other major accomplishments. She lived what some might consider a hard life but she did it every day smiling and laughing. She was an inspiration to others and took joy in every moment she could. She was devoted to her husband Steven and each and every one of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved the people her family married and the friends they brought to her home. She will be greatly missed and has left a valued legacy of a life well lived.
